The OEM cartridges set the standard for high quality and longer lasting print. But cost more with less ink/toner.

While the compatible and remanufatured cartridges can produce more good quality prints in affordable and reasonable price.

Original Equipment Manufacturer (or OEM) is a name brand cartridge from one of the printer manufacturers.

A compatible cartridge is built from scratch to fit into your printer just like the OEM version. It will still provide you with the same performance and quality as an OEM product or a remanufactured product, but it’s made using a slightly different process.

A remanufactured cartridge is a cartridge that has been recycled to meet or exceed OEM standards. It has been inspected for any defects and refilled with ink or powder.

A toner cartridge is a printer consumable that contains powder and are used by laser printers.

An ink cartridge is a printer consumable that contains liquid and are used by inkjet printers.

It depends on your needs.

If you need good quality color prints and won't fade away easily, the inkjet printer is for you.
If you require high speed, high volume printing, especially text documents, the laser printer suits your need.

The toner cartridge is a container that holds the toner powder.

The drum unit is an electrically charged cylinder that transfers the toner powder to paper to create text and images.

A drum unit can be incorporated with the toner cartridge or sold separately as a single unit, depending on the consumable requirements of your printer.

It costs less to have the toner cartridge and drum unit to be separate.

Because typically you only need to replace the toner cartridge every now and then. And the drum unit is only replaced after 3-4 toner cartridge replacements.

Its because the drum unit and toner cartridge were replaced together. It can provide consistent print quality and  it is easier to install the cartridges into the printer.

HP and Canon laser printers are both manufactured using the same engine and technology for decades since the 1970's.

They are both compatible to each other.

Only certain Brother and Fuji Xerox printers have similar engine installed so they can use a particular compatible drum unit.

The reason printer ink expires is that it dries up slowly and can't be used to print documents. The ink is wet for a period of time. And after a while, some of the ink may get dry, and eventually all of the ink is dry.

But if the ink cartridges are stored and sealed correctly, it can last long even after the expiration date. To store your ink cartridges and possibly extend their shelf life, keep them out of the sunlight and in an airtight container.

Printing documents for office use should be no problem with an expired cartridge if it still has wet ink.
So make sure that you check first if the ink inside the cartridge is still wet by shaking it.
